    What is Altitude Training?

If you’re training for altitude, you may wish to complete some gym-based altitude training.

For instance, if you’re going to do a high-altitude climb or hike in the near future, you might want to experience what it is like to exercise at a high altitude in a safe and supportive environment.

Completing hypoxia training before a climb could also help you pre-acclimatise and prepare for the bodily effects of extreme altitude.

    BENEFITSOF ALTITUDE TRAINING

There are several benefits to high altitude training (otherwise known as hypoxia training). These are just some of the advantages:

    Increased oxygen flow to muscles

When you exercise, your muscles use up oxygen. During strenuous exercise, your blood struggles to keep up with the oxygen demand, leading your muscles to eventually become fatigued.

Altitude training can help with this muscle fatigue by increasing erythropoietin (EPO) production. EPO is a hormone that makes red blood cells (which are responsible for carrying oxygen to parts of the body). This is your body’s way of adapting to the low oxygen levels at high altitudes.

Higher EPO = increased red blood cells = better oxygen delivery.

Enhanced oxygen delivery helps your muscles perform strenuous exercise for extended periods.

    Better lactic acid capacity

During exercise, your muscles produce lactic acid. As lactic acid accumulates, it causes muscle fatigue.

Altitude training can increase your body’s tolerance to lactic acid, allowing your muscles to sustain higher levels before getting fatigued.

    Increased aerobic capacity

High altitude training can also increase your maximal oxygen intake (the highest amount of oxygen your body is able to consume during strenuous exercise).

A higher maximal oxygen intake can help you experience improved endurance during exercise.
